Gorgona Island...an encounter with the nature!!!

The Voyage!!!

After 12 hours by boat from the municipality of Guapi, we reached gorgonas and find two fabulous forms of enjoy the island.  

On land

the perfect plan is walk on the trails,visit the ruins of the old  penal, the  old pier and  flip to on the island by boat. Reach the Camaronera for  enjoy of sea  and  ten freshwater streams that pour his wealth on sand.

On the sea

Gorgona on the island there are many different entertainment:

Sighting of whales:

The whales can see from the island in july, because they come to mate and give birth, in the warm waters of the sea.

Is really fantastic see the water jets,their large tails, the jumps and his little newborn whale calves.

Diving and snorkeling :

Is interesting diving in the waters of the island, because it is rich in variety of marine species and also have  geographic locations to practice.  

you can diving with tank and have a experience  really fantastic in the Tiburonera, you can see beautiful turtles,fish shoals and the big whale shark!!! 

     

Visit to the museum of theold penal and the ruins of the ultramarina prison 

Here you can see some elements that they were used by prisoners and also know about of the history the beginning of the prison  and the form in as prisoners spent their days... Also you can see the pictures make      by the prisoners, as well as hairdressing chairs, tools and  typewriters.

It is really terrifying and interesting!!!

The food on the Gorgona Island

The food is really fabulous because can be found various dishes but all very delicious...all based marine species!!!  shrimp,different kinds of fish, squid, among others... and a coconut rise...

History

Gorgona  is a Colombian island in the Pacific Ocean situated about 35 km (22 mi) off the Colombian Pacific coast.

Administratively the island is part of the Municipality of Guapí in the Department of Cauca.  The island functioned as a prison until 1984 when it was turned into a National Natural Park noted for a large number of endemic species and unique ecosystems.

1959  was declared  prison of gorgona and   twenty five years, the only ones who could enjoy of the spectacle of humpback whales were prisoners of Gorgona.
1959 y 1982 was home to prisoners from around the country.
1984 was declared heritage of  humanity for the Unesco.
1985 was closed the prison of Gorgona  and became a tourist nature reserve.
