History


Gorgona  is a Colombian island in the Pacific Ocean situated about 35 km (22 mi) off the Colombian Pacific coast.
Administratively the island is part of the Municipality of Guapí in the Department of Cauca.  The island functioned as a prison until 1984 when it was turned into a National Natural Park noted for a large number of endemic species and unique ecosystems.

1959  was declared  prison of gorgona and   twenty five years, the only ones who could enjoy of the spectacle of humpback whales were prisoners of Gorgona.
1959 y 1982 was home to prisoners from around the country.
1984 was declared heritage of  humanity for the Unesco.
1985 was closed the prison of Gorgona  and became a tourist nature reserve.
